BEN (Bicycling Empowerment Network) is a non-profit organisation based in Cape Town, South Africa.

Launched on 7 February 2002, BEN is a national program promoting the use of bicycles in order to address low-cost mobility, health and access to opportunity, employment, skills and education.

In collaboration with both national and international development & donor agencies (such as Re-Cycle), the project facilitates the transportation of bicycles from Europe, Great Britain and the United States to South Africa, the establishment of bicycle workshop projects and the introduction of bicycle user paths / networks. To ensure the success of the project, BEN has established a Cape Town partnership with the New York based Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP), the Utrecht based Interface for Cycling Expertise (I-CE) and the Velo Mondial 2006 Conference. In addition, BEN is focused on a partnership with the Shova Kalula (Pedal Easy) project of the South African National Department of Transport (NDoT), various South African Rotary clubs, the Cape Argus Cycle Tour Trust, the Amy Biehl Foundation and the Pedal Power Association.

Re~Cycle is a registered charity (reg. 1063570) based in Colchester, England.

Re~Cycle collect bicycles and spare parts in the UK and ships them to various African countries. Partnerships with local organisations, like BEN, ensure that the bicycles are distributed where they are needed. Whether it is enabling school children and low paid workers to cover considerable distances in order to learn or work, allowing HIV/AIDS health workers to reach remote villages, or providing disadvantaged youths with a rickshaw and an independent livelihood, these projects utilise the humble bicycle to empower thousands of people.

Past shipments include Liberia, Namibia, The Gambia, Ghana and South Africa

There’s bound to be a bicycle gathering dust in your garage...contact Re~Cycle if you can spare it!
